One season done as school sports return

Jayvon T. and Santana C.

School sports were closed since winter of 2020 and now that they are back, students can have something to do in their spare time after school.

Boys basketball, baseball, girls soccer, and cross-country opened the year this fall. Next week we’ll switch to volleyball and boys soccer.

Covid is a big concern. Players in indoor sports must be tested twice a week. Players on all teams have to wear a mask when they’re on the bench but can play maskless in the games.

If someone tests positive on a team, the whole team can lose 14 days or the whole season of the sport.

Baseball has been a challenge this year. Most of us have not played any sports in two years, so the rust has been showing. But we are starting to get the hang of it once again.

It has been interesting so far. We have had a game canceled, which wasn’t good, and have done a lot of practicing at the school. We have been taking advantage of the time we have had the baseball field.

It was a little bit awkward at first because we hadn’t been playing any sports in two years but once it started to get not awkward it was fun. We’ve won game and lost twice.

We tried but weren’t able to make the playoffs for the first time in 18 years.

In basketball, players struggled a little getting used to playing on a team again. That showed up in our results – the varsity finished with a record of 2-5.

(Editor’s note: Jayvon played on the basketball team, and Santana played on the baseball team.)
