What Are Teachers Willing To Do?

Avary L

The bullying and harassment going on in Stewart Middle School is the cause of the recent walkouts. The first walkout was supported by the school and staff, but the second one was not. How does the staff feel about it? What are they going to do? What are they willing to do? What teacher supports the walkouts? What teachers don’t support it?

Ms. Renee

Do you support the walkouts?

I support the walkouts when it’s done in a positive way. I think it was good, but it turned into a bullying season, and people saying mean things to others. The students should try having a conversation with the principal.

How do you feel about the bullying?

It’s scary to me. Kids are killing themselves. I knew a girl who went here but moved and killed herself because of bullying. It’s not teacher vs kids or kids vs police; it’s just kids. It makes me sad.

What are you willing to do about the bullying?

At this point it’s not about me. If I was asked, I would be willing to, but my hands are tied. It’s hard to find out who’s doing the bullying. So, I am only getting little parts of the story.

Ms. Hinkel

Do you support the walkouts?

Yes, I support them, I think it is important for all students to have a voice. The first walkout, I love the idea. I think it was kind of rushed. It’s hard to manage a crowd. Today’s walkout I have considered has a message, but I am concerned that we now have targeted the principal and he is not the only person to blame. When we are singling out people, it’s bullying. I do understand there are differences, but it is still not ok.

How do you feel about the bullying?

I think there is some work that needs to be done. I think that it is not just here. We need to work on it everywhere. … My brother has seen stuff like this too where he works.

What are you willing to do?

I am willing to do anything within reason that I can do. It’s not just one person. We don’t want to hurt others.

Ms. Bridge

Do you support the walkout?

I support the message. I am sad that kids are doing things to each other that make other kids so sad. Happy that kids are standing up for it.

How do you feel about the bullying?

I don’t see what goes online, I see more bullying to the kids themselves. They are talking bad about themselves.

What are you willing to do?

I am willing to do whatever it takes. I want kids to be happy to be here, I want kids to be nice people.

Mr. Gilbert

Do you support the walkout?

Yes and no. I am a big believer in kids having voices and speaking out, but no because it was going to be bad and I was afraid of more bullying. I wonder what other things could kids come up with.

How do you feel about the bullying?

School is no place for people to be harassed. This should be a safe place for everyone. I get sad for kids, because I am almost 60 years old we didn’t have social media. If I had a problem with another, kid home was a safe place. But for y’all, social media never turns off. Its make me sad.

What are you willing to do?

I am willing to listen, listen, and listen. I am willing to call stuff out when I see it. I am willing to teach my students to face the problems. Seeing this from other kids is hard. If kids stop and think about the stuff we are reading in ELA right now, it’s like social media bullying.
